All is settled in the circles of the PBA draft, with most of the formalities taken care of last December 27, deadline for applications of incoming rookies. Controversial Guard Mike Cortez, MBA Superstar Rommel Adducul, Eddie Laure, John Ferriols and Filam Guard Jimmy Alapag declared themselves eligible for the draft. Another who threw himself in: UE Warrior Ronald Tubid, who, according to scouts, could be a lottery pick.
Others who put their names in and altered the draft are St. Benilde's Sunday Salvacion who could have stayed in college but will likely be a lottery pick. There's also 6-9 Tower Vincent San Diego, whose height could land him a top-10 pick. And lets not forget the Filams who are untested but beaming with potential.
Welcoat high flyer Jean Marc Pingris did not officially apply for the draft. He will stay in the Amateurs and National team to hone up his skills and gain maturity. Others who are also missing are Willy Wilson, Jeff Napa and Alwyn Espiritu.
This years draft is deep in experience because of the influx of MBA veterans. The College ballers are also deep in talent. There are the needed shooters, handlers and jammers who promise to make the PBA more exciting.
It will all be settled on January 12, but here's a preview of things to come.
Rank Player Position Height College/MBA/PBL
1 Mike Cortez PG 6'1 DLSU/ICTSI
The most Pro ready player in the draft could turn back the time to 96' for the milkmen. But controversy still surrounds him, a good rookie year will straighten things out.
2 Rommel Adducul C 6'6 SSC-R/Manila/Welcoat
An instant superstar post player, with 5 years of Pro experience and 5 College Championships. He is the man to pick if you want instant production.
3 Eddie Laure F 6'3 Adamson/Batangas/Welcoat
Talented, Versatile, Powerful, these are the adjectives you will hear when you talk about Steady Eddie.
4 John Ferriols F 6'4 Negros/Dazz
A long layoff may dampen his first round chances, but he is still my fourth ranked player.
5 Sunday Salvacion G 6'3 Benilde/Montana
How can you pass up on this guy, a potential scorer, very athletic and has good range, showed Defensive skills in the current PBL conference.
6 Billy Mamaril C 6'6 Davao/Montana
Still very raw, the son of once the PBA's tallest player could turn into a fierce rebounder and shot blocker. If taken by TNT, he can be influenced by Asi Taulava to form the most dominant frontline in the league.
7 Reynel Hugnatan F 6'4 Negros/ICTSI
Another experienced Pro player, Hugnatan is a pure power forward nothing more nothing less. Speed and quickness is a question mark but will certainly be an able backup.
8 Enrico Villanueva C 6'6 Ateneo/Ateneo Pioneer
Being able to compete against taller and heftier post players will be a challenge for Enrico. If Shell picks him at #3 then he will be forced to play Paras like minutes, which will lead to hopefully a Paras like performance.
9 Bruce Dacia F 6'4 San Juan/ICTSI
Athletic and long for the 3 spot, his size can still improve with training without sacrificing speed and leaping ability. If and when he gets bigger, then he can be an effective match up dilemna.
10 Cyrus Baguio G 6'2 UST/Dazz
Best leaper and the most exciting entrant in the draft. Signs of the next Bong Alvarez or Vergel Meneses. Improved defensive ability could merit him the Kobe of the PBA.
11 Ronald Tubid G 6'2 UE/Welcoat
Hardworking and intense, he is an interesting prospect which scouts are raving about. He is showing mad game in the current PBL conference despite competing for minutes at Welcoat
12 Stephen Padilla G 5'10 Cebu
Every team would love to have a pure shooter like him.
