CEBU CITY — Red Bull’s high-flying forward Cyrus Baguio scored a pair of perfect 50s to beat San Miguel Beer’s Joey Mente and Coca-Cola’s Reynel Hugnatan in the finals of the Thunder Bird Slamdunk competition during the PBA All-Star festivities over the weekend at the Cebu Coliseum.
Baguio earned his first 50 when he made a left-handed slam after making a high bounce from the right baseline then capped his aerial show with another 50 by picking up the ball from the outstretched left arm of fellow dunk participant Nelbert Omolon for a reverse two-handed rim-rattler.
Mente, the 2002 champion, managed only a combined score of 97 after tallying 50 on his first try, slamming off teammate Olsen Racela, and a 47 on a one-handed from a Jun Simon’ backboard pass.
Hugnatan, whose no-look first dunk in the prelims merited a 50, was a disappointment in the finals with a total of 91 points. —Noli CRUZ

CEBU CITY -- Peter June Simon's perfect stunt came late as Iligan City-born Cyrus Baguio went on to win the Thunderbird Slam Dunk crown Sunday in the preliminary event of the Talk N' Tex 2004 All-Star Game at the jampacked Cebu Coliseum.
Simon, who earlier downplayed his chances in the event, said in the vernacular, "It was unfortunate my first attempt did not make it."
Baguio, for his part, told reporters: "I just got lucky. I came prepared for it. I even have more tricks should the finals was tied. I will have a year ahead of me to prepare for my title-defense."
Purefoods TJ Hotdogs' Simon, a former University of Mindanao (UM) Wildcats cager who hails from Makilala, failed in his first attempt in the first round of eliminations. His second attempt was only good for 39 points. (MLS)

Eight years after creating a stir here for winning a collegiate slam dunk competition as a young high-schooler, Cyrus Baguio returned to the scene of that epic triumph to essay another jamming victory this time among the major leaguers.
Baguio gave himself an advanced gift for his 24th birthday on Thursday by claiming the slum dunk crown in the 2004 PBA All-Star Week at the Cebu Coliseum.
For the Red Bull Barako sophomore two-guard, it was another grand jam show in the same venue after ruling the 1996 Cebu Amateur Athletic Association slam dunk competition that also featured home-town hero Dondon Hontiveros. He surprised everybody here then for winning it as a high-schooler from Southwestern University.
Ranged against fellow pros this time, Baguio rose above the challenge, topping the field that included former titlist Joey Mente, Reynel Hugnatan, Marc Pingris, Rich Alvarez, June Peter Simon, Sunday Salvacion, Sonny Thoss and Nelbert Omolon.
His was really an amazing show that he missed a perfect total score by just one point.
With the help of Omolon whom he used as a ball rack, Baguio soared to get the ball from the Sta. Lucia player’s stretched left hand then made a 180-degree two-handed slam in clinching the win with a perfect 50.
He had two 50s and one 49 on different slams earlier.
“Kinabahan din ako dahil Tuesday pa kami dito at puro kain. Inisip ko baka bumigat ako at hindi ako makatalon,” said Baguio, also a former slam dunk champion in the PBL.
“Pero noong naglalaban na, nakumpiyansa na ako. Meron pa akong reserbang hindi nailabas,” Baguio also said, now looking forward to showcase these other tricks in a bid to regain the title next year. - Nelson Beltran, Philippine Star
